TOY STORY Co-Creator Talks Franchise Future and Says More Sequels Could Still Be on the Table
With Toy Story 5 arriving in theaters this week and positive early reactions continuing Pixar’s impressive track record with the franchise, fans are once again looking ahead and asking a familiar question… How much longer can Toy Story keep going?
According to Andrew Stanton, one of the creative forces behind the beloved series, the answer may be longer than some people expect.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Stanton opened up about where the franchise could head beyond Toy Story 5, explaining that there has always been a roadmap for continuing the story through Bonnie’s life if the opportunity presented itself.
Stanton said: “So hopefully, I think that’s the pattern, if it keeps going. So I always knew that there was a natural possibility to just follow Bonnie, and just follow her life, and just see what happens to the toys if it keeps going. So there was always that seed.”
That idea makes a lot of sense when you look at how the franchise has evolved. The first three films largely centered on Andy and his journey from childhood to adulthood. Toy Story 3 provided what many considered a perfect ending, yet Pixar found a compelling reason to continue the story with Toy Story 4.
Now, Toy Story 5 is pushing things forward once again, this time with a story that explores how modern kids interact with technology, tablets, and phones.
Stanton also explained that the filmmakers have approached each installment with the understanding that it could be the final chapter, while still leaving room for more adventures if audiences want them.
“It’s like a series that doesn’t know it’s going to get picked up for the next season. We’d always end it like it could end here, but we’ve passed the badge on from Woody to Jessie at the end of 4, just in case it keeps going. So it’s always been that kind of mindset.”
That mindset has helped the franchise avoid feeling like it’s simply extending itself for the sake of another sequel. Every film has managed to find an emotional core that connects with audiences, even as the cast of characters and circumstances continue to evolve.
Of course, every new Toy Story announcement seems to spark the same debate online. Following Toy Story 4, discussions about whether another sequel was necessary largely faded after audiences embraced the film. Then Toy Story 5 was announced, and the conversation immediately resurfaced.
At this point, though, the results speak for themselves. With Toy Story 5 currently holding a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 112 reviews, it appears Pixar has once again delivered a movie that resonates with critics and fans.
The film tackles the growing relationship children have with screens and digital devices, creating a story that speaks not only to kids but also to the parents raising them. That kind of timely emotional storytelling has always been one of Pixar’s greatest strengths.
Personally, it’s hard to imagine the franchise continuing to find meaningful stories after Toy Story 3 was released, yet both Toy Story 4 and now Toy Story 5 seem determined to prove there are still worthwhile places to take these characters.
Every installment has delivered at least one moment that hits emotionally, whether it leaves viewers smiling, reflecting, or completely devastated.
If Pixar can keep finding stories with that level of heart and emotional impact, it’s easy to understand why Stanton isn’t closing the door on Toy Story 6 and beyond.
Toy Story 5 opens in theaters on June 19, 2026.
