Trailer for Beautifully Animated Surfing Film IN WAVES Based on a True Love Story

A beautiful trailer has been released for the animated film In Waves, from Phuong Mai Nguyen, in her feature directorial debut.

The screenplay is written by Fanny Burdino and Samuel Doux; based on the graphic novel of the same name by AJ Dungo. The two main characters are voiced by Will Sharpe and Stephanie Hsu, and the film’s original music was done by Oklou and Rob.

The synopsis reads: “In Phuong Mai Nguyen's feature debut, shy teenager and amateur skateboarder AJ meets Kristen, an avid surfer, at a high school dance, and he's immediately enamored with her.

“Against the backdrop of sunny, vibrant Los Angeles and in the throes of first love, Kristen introduces AJ to the joys and culture of surfing, despite AJ's initial fear of all things water.

“In Waves follows the couple's love story as they take on every adversity that comes their way, powered by their passion for the ocean, for their community, and for each other.

This looks like such a uniquely animated film, that tells a personal story that comes through so well even just through the trailer.

Check it out below, and watch In Waves in select theaters on November 27th, 2026, or when it hits Netflix on December 11th.
