Trailer for Blumhouse’s Netflix Series NIGHTMARES OF NATURE Unleashes Horror in the Wild

Nature documentaries already have a built-in sense of terror. We tune in to learn about the beauty of wildlife, but what usually sticks are those moments that make us squirm as killer whales tearing into baby seals, lions clashing in violent battles, and spiders that are far too big for anyone’s comfort.

Horror powerhouse Blumhouse is taking that primal fear and pushing it further with Nightmares of Nature, a chilling new documentary series coming soon to Netflix.

A collaboration between Blumhouse Television and Plimsoll Productions, the series will be narrated by Stranger Things star Maya Hawke.

Netflix is describing the project as a “natural history and horror series,” one that doesn’t hold back when it comes to the perils of the animal kingdom. According to the official press release, “each season follows three animal characters facing all the horrors and monsters nature can throw at them.”

The series will launch with two seasons. Each season features three 45-minute episodes, and Netflix just dropped a trailer that previews what’s in store with “A Cabin in the Woods” and “Lost in the Jungle”.

Season 1, “A Cabin in the Woods”, arrives September 30. This story unfolds in the shadowy wilderness of North America where “our three characters (a soon-to-be-mother mouse, a young bachelor raccoon, and a froglet who has seen terrible things) quickly discover how scary the woods truly are and find themselves in search of sanctuary. They stumble upon an old cabin in the woods, thinking it a safe haven, they soon discover their nightmares have really only just begun…”

Then on October 28, Season 2 “Lost in the Jungle” raises the stakes in the heart of Central America. As the press release describes it, these episodes are “set deep in the creepy Central American rainforest, a place with more creative ways to die than anywhere else on Earth.

“For our three characters (a young opossum, a newly hatched iguana, and a feisty jumping spider) the nightmare of staying alive in the jungle escalates fast when they discover an abandoned laboratory deep in the jungle. And before they know it, lost in this unnatural labyrinth, with a new monster hiding behind every corner, they are in the struggle of their lives to get out before it is too late…”

From the looks of it, Blumhouse is taking the documentary format and turning it into something uniquely eerie. With a mix of nature, horror, and storytelling, Nightmares of Nature seems like it will be both fascinating and unnerving to watch.
