Trailer For DISTRICT 9 Director Neill Blomkamp's Mysterious Series of Experimental Sci-Fi Films
District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is letting his creative juices flow as he launches a new mysterious project called Oat Studios. Basically, he's directing and releasing a series of experimental short films that he will sell through Steam, which is Valve’s PC distribution service. Today the first trailer has been released for Oat Studios' "Volume 1", which gives us a taste of what we can expect to see from the series, and it's packed full of extremely cool sci-fi badassery!
I was a fan of Blomkamp's short film work before he became a feature film director, and it's exciting to see him go back to his roots to make more short films. The shorts teased in this trailer look awesome, and it makes me wonder if any of these will end up spawning feature length films. Even if they don't, at least we'll get some entertainment from these shorts.
The trailer starts off with a shot of the Eiffel Tower in what looks to be a post-apocalyptic future, the voiceover explaining that aliens have invaded Earth to exterminate humanity. The aliens are pretty freakin' cool looking. The trailer then shows a woman, who looks to be played by Dakota Fanning, blasting away at an alien in a red-lit corridor. Then there's footage of American soldiers in the Vietnam war where unexplainable things are happening and more aliens are causing havoc.
Over the years, Blomkamp has made films such as Elysium and Chappie, and I'm excited to see what comes of this short film series he's developing. Watch the trailer below and tell us what you think!
