Trailer For Jesse Eisenberg's THE DEBUT Unleashes Community Theater Madness with Paul Giamatti and Julianne Moore

A24 has released the first trailer for The Debut, the latest directorial effort from Jesse Eisenberg following the critical success of A Real Pain. This time around, Eisenberg dives into the world of community theater with an R-rated musical comedy that looks equal parts hilarious, chaotic, and surprisingly intense.

The film stars Julianne Moore as Mona Friedman, a reserved housewife whose life takes an unexpected turn when she lands a tiny role in a local theater production.

What begins as a simple creative outlet quickly spirals into an all-consuming obsession as Mona fully embraces method acting and becomes fiercely protective of her character, no matter how small the part may be.

Standing in her way is the production’s demanding director, Jerry, played by Paul Giamatti. The trailer paints him as a legendary figure within the local theater scene, referred to as “the biggest name in New Jersey community theater.”

While that title may sound amusing on the surface, Jerry appears to run his productions with the intensity of a drill sergeant.

The footage introduces Mona as someone who admits she hasn’t sung in front of anyone “since church choir,” yet somehow finds herself stepping into the spotlight.

Before long, she’s getting a warning from a character played by Halle Bailey, who tells her: “Jerry is going to test you, and push you, and drag you through the mud.”

As the trailer unfolds, that warning proves accurate. Jerry relentlessly critiques Mona’s performance, at one point bluntly telling her: “Every single thing you are doing is not working,”

Rather than breaking her spirit, however, his harsh approach seems to fuel her determination, setting the stage for what looks like an increasingly absurd battle of artistic wills.

The trailer gives off the energy of a high-pressure drama transplanted into the often-overlooked world of community theater. The stakes may be smaller, but the passion, ego, and ambition on display appear every bit as explosive.

Eisenberg also appears in the film as a fellow member of the theater troupe, joining a cast that includes Cara Buono, Craig Bierko, Eldar Isgandarov, and Bernadette Peters.

Eisenberg directed The Debut from his own screenplay, with producers Emma Stone, Dave McCary, Ali Herting, and Eisenberg himself helping bring the project to life.

The Debut looks like another fascinating swing from Eisenberg. With Moore and Giamatti going head-to-head in a story about artistic obsession, bruised egos, and the surprisingly fierce battlefield of community theater, this is shaping up to be and entertaining movie.
