Trailer for Kiyoshi Kurosawa's THE SAMURAI AND THE PRISIONER Teases an Intense Feudal-Era Murder Mystery

A new trailer has arrived for The Samurai and the Prisoner, giving audiences another look at legendary filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa's gripping samurai mystery before it makes its way to U.S. theaters next month.

Previously known under its original Japanese title Kokurojo (or Kokurojo: The Samurai and the Prisoner), the film premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it earned strong reviews from critics.

Now, Janus Films has released the main official U.S. trailer, offering a suspenseful preview of what looks like a compelling historical thriller.

Set during Japan's Warring States period, The Samurai and the Prisoner marks Kurosawa's first-ever period feature, and it looks like an incredible change of pace for the acclaimed filmmaker. The story blends political intrigue, murder, psychological tension, and classic detective storytelling into one fascinating package.

The film centers on Lord Murashige, played by Masahiro Motoki, who rebels against the tyrannical Oda only to find himself trapped inside his own castle under siege. As enemy forces close in, a string of bizarre murders and unexplained incidents begin tearing apart what little trust remains within the fortress.

With suspicion spreading through his court and the possibility of a traitor hiding among his own men, Murashige has little choice but to seek help from Kanbei, a brilliant but dangerous strategist imprisoned beneath the castle. Together, they must unravel the mystery before everything falls apart.

The official synopsis reads: "When Lord Murashige (Masahiro Motoki) rises up against the tyrannical Oda, he finds himself besieged within the walls of his own castle. Isolated, he is confronted with a series of mysterious crimes that shatter the fragile order of his court, plunging the fortress into fear and suspicion.

“With Oda's army closing in and a traitor hiding among his ranks, Murashige is forced into an uneasy alliance with Kanbei, a brilliant & dangerous strategist held prisoner in the dungeon, as he must outwit his enemies and uncover the truth before time runs out."

The cast also includes Masaki Suda, Yuriko Yoshitaka, Takashi Aoki, Ryota Miyadate, Tasuku Emoto, and Joe Odagiri.

Kurosawa has built an incredible career with acclaimed films including Sweet Home, Cure, License to Live, Charisma, Pulse, Bright Future, Doppelganger, Retribution, Tokyo Sonata, Real, Seventh Code, Journey to the Shore, Creepy, Daguerrotype, Before We Vanish, To the Ends of the Earth, Wife of a Spy, Chime, Serpent's Path, and Cloud.

Early reactions from Cannes have been extremely positive. One review describes the film as "a work that feels a bit like Agatha Christie, a bit like Shakespeare, and even a bit like Samurai Columbo."

The new trailer leans into the film's tense atmosphere, shifting loyalties, and an intriguing mystery that looks packed with twists. If you're a fan of samurai dramas, historical thrillers, or smart detective stories, this is definitely one to keep on your radar.

The Samurai and the Prisoner opened in Japan on June 19, and Janus Films will release the film in select U.S. theaters beginning July 31, 2026.
