Trailer For Movie-Making Documentary MAKING MARIE ANTOINETTE From Eleanor Coppola

A trailer has been released for the documentary feature Making Marie Antoinette, from Eleanor Coppola. The footage in the doc was all taken on set of the film Marie Antoinette, directed by Sofia Coppola, daughter of Eleanor.

Sofia and her mother took tons of extra material from the shoot and looked back on their journals kept during this time, and began to compile it during the pandemic. After Eleanor passed away in 2024, Sofia went on to finish the doc on her own.

The doc’s synopsis from its debut at New York Film Festival reads: "Polarizing upon release, Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette is now, 20 years later, widely embraced as a 21st-century cinematic cornerstone and a distilled expression of its director’s recurring themes of celebrity, wealth, and isolation.

“For the first time, Coppola’s dynamic craftsmanship in creating her personal vision for the brief life of the 18th-century queen (Kirsten Dunst) in the years leading up to the French Revolution is on full display in this diary shot by her mother, filmmaker Eleanor Coppola, on the film’s set in Versailles in 2005.

“From almost 80 hours of video, Eleanor began to assemble the footage during the pandemic lockdown, and Sofia helped finish editing it after Eleanor's death in 2024. Narrated by Diane Lane, reciting Eleanor’s journals from the time, this is a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse that is both process-oriented and touchingly personal."

This looks like a really cool dive behind the scenes of the high-budget film Marie Antoinette, but it also looks like a lovely look into the relationship between a mother and daughter.

Check out the trailer below, and watch Making Marie Antoinette in select US theatres on October 23rd.
