Trailer For RESURRECTION Teases a Dazzling Genre-Bending Dreamscape Unlike Anything You’ve Seen

Janus Films has released the full official trailer for Bi Gan’s highly anticipated film Resurrection, a visually hypnotic, genre-bending cinematic experience that has been captivating audiences since its debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

Known for his stunning, poetic visual storytelling in Kaili Blues and Long Day’s Journey into Night, Bi returns with what looks to be his most ambitious and surreal project yet.

Set in a distant future where most of humanity has lost the ability to dream, Resurrection follows Miss Shu, played by Shu Qi, as she discovers one being who can still experience dreams.

Using her rare power to perceive illusions, she enters his mind to uncover the truth hidden in his visions of Chinese history. The film is divided into six chapters, each representing one of the five senses, along with the mind, creating a layered journey through emotion, perception, and memory.

The film stars Jackson Yee as the “monster” whose dreams hold the key to humanity’s forgotten imagination, alongside Mark Chao, Li Gengxi, and Huang Jue.

Every sequence is designed to immerse viewers in a different style of filmmaking, from silent-era fantasy to gritty war thriller to surreal romance, all connected through Bi Gan’s distinct dreamlike rhythm.

According to the official NYFF synopsis: "This phantasmagoric dream machine from visionary Chinese director Bi Gan is an elusive yet monumental love letter to a century of cinema.

“Unfolding over five chapters that feature a dazzling array of styles, Resurrection is a cascade of imagery united by a luminous mythopoetic conceit: in a sci-fi-coded world where people have lost the desire to dream in the hopes of prolonging life, rogue 'fantasmers' continue to stoke their imaginations and exist within unreality.

“From this magical premise, the film sends its ever-morphing protagonist (played by Jackson Yee) through a series of genres, from Méliès-inflected silent fantasy to wartime thriller to con-artist buddy pic to millennial vampire romance — the latter depicted in one of Bi's customary, ever astonishing, single takes.

“Even within genre parameters, the director never takes the road well-traveled, offering jolts & marvels around every corner. Resurrection is one of the most audacious and ambitious gifts for cinematic thrill-seekers in many a moon."

Resurrection is co-written by Zhai Xiaohui and Bi Gan, from a story by Bi himself. It earned a Special Award at Cannes for its visionary scope and innovation.

Janus Films is bringing Resurrection to select U.S. theaters starting December 12th, 2025.
