Trailer For SHOPPING FOR SUPERMAN, a Documentary That Explores The Rise and Struggle of Comic Book Shops
Comic book shops have always been more than just retail spaces. When I was growing up they were a safe haven, community hub, and a place to find and read stories that I could connect with.
We have a trailer to share with you for an upcoming documentary titled Shopping for Superman, and it digs into the rise, legacy, and ongoing battle for survival that these neighborhood comic shops face today.
At their peak, there were about 5,000 comic shops spread across the U.S. That number’s been shrinking fast. This film is a conversation about why these stores still matter. They’re not just places to buy books and toys, they’re where groundbreaking ideas and lifelong fandoms take shape.
The movie highlights just how vital these shops are for creators, publishers, and fans alike. It explores the rise and struggle of neighborhood comic shops, tracing their impact on storytelling, publishing, and the fans who call them home.
The doc tells “The origin story of your friendly neighborhood comic shop. Tracing the 50-year history of the local comic book store's far-reaching impact, we examine their cultural significance and the numerous threats they face today.”
Filmmaker Wes Eastin tells Geeks Are Sexy: “We’re currently doing the festival circuit with our premiere set to be, coincidentally, on Free Comic Book Day at the Cinema Columbus Film Festival in Columbus, OH at 4:30 PM on May 3rd at the Gateway Film Center.”
“After the next month or two we’ll know if there are other fests that would require us to not publicly show the film and if we get the all clear we can release it later this year.”
