Trailer for the Behind-the-Mask STAR WARS Documentary ELSTREE 1976

Elstree 1976 is a new Star Wars documentary that offers hardcore fans of the franchise an interesting look at the lives of the actors whose faces we never saw in the original films and the effect Star Wars had on them. George LucasStar Wars was just another job for a lot of people. Little did they know how there lives were going to change after it was released.

The doc centers on the actors who played characters such as Darth Vader (David Prowse), Boba Fett (Jeremy Bulloch), Greedo (Paul Blake), X-Wing pilot Angus MacInnes, Stormtroopers, and more. While they were making the movie they never suspected how popular their characters were going to become. We’ve seen a ton of Star Wars docs over the year, but I like the unique spin that this one has. It’s really interesting to hear these people talk about what it was like to be a part of the film.

When George Lucas began work on a mysterious project named Star Wars in North London back in 1976, no one could have predicted how it would go on to shape cinema as we know it, least of all the legions of on-screen extras. In this affectionate documentary, we meet ten of those bit performers who appeared, however fleetingly, in Lucas’ box office behemoth. Rather than the standard ‘making of’ – the likes of which have been seen countless times before – Elstree 1976 paints an intimate portrait of these performers, examining how their brushes with Lucas shaped the paths of their lives. With a cast ranging from Darth Vader himself (or David Prowse as he’s better known to his friends), to a performer whose character was cut entirely from the finished film, this is not so much a film about Star Wars as the story of a group of people united by one life-changing experience.

Elstreet 1976 hits limited theaters and VOD on May 6th.
