Trailer For I SWEAR Showcases a Powerful True Story About Living With Tourette’s

Sony Pictures Classics has released a new U.S. trailer for I Swear, a Scottish drama that recently wonthree major BAFTA Awards just weeks ago.

The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and went on to become a surprise hit in the UK, where it climbed to the #1 spot at the box office. Now American audiences are about to discover why so many people are calling this one a must-watch.

The film comes from acclaimed director Kirk Jones, whose previous work includes Waking Ned Devine, Nanny McPhee, Everybody’s Fine, and What to Expect When You’re Expecting.

This time he tells the true story of John Davidson, a young man whose life takes an unexpected turn after he develops Tourette’s syndrome as a teenager in 1980s Britain.

Robert Aramayo, who fans will recognize as Elrond in The Rings of Power, stars as John. Aramayo’s performance has already earned him the BAFTA Award for Best Actor. The cast also includes Peter Mullan, Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson, Paul Donnelly, and Scott Ellis Watson.

The story centers on John Davidson, a bright and funny football-loving teenager whose world changes dramatically when Tourette’s syndrome suddenly appears at age 15.

At the time, the condition was barely understood and even doctors struggled to recognize it. That confusion and misunderstanding left John feeling pushed aside by the people around him, including his own family.

The film’s official synopsis reads: “Based on an inspirational true story, I Swear charts the remarkable journey of a Scottish man whose life was irrevocably changed by the sudden onset of Tourette's syndrome.

“A bright, funny, football-mad lad with everything ahead of him, 15-year-old John Davidson's life seemingly splinters in 1983 when he develops uncontrollable vocal & physical tics when Tourette's was barely understood, even by doctors.

“Feeling ostracized by the world around him — including his family — he retreats into years of relative isolation, burdened by the anxiety, shame, and loneliness... Everything shifts when John (now in his late 20s) meets Dottie, no-nonsense mother of a former schoolmate, who has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

“The bond that forms between them is as unexpected as it is life-changing. With her fierce encouragement & unwavering support, John finds belonging, purpose, and confidence to be himself.”

The real John Davidson eventually turned his experience into something meaningful by creating the 1989 documentary John’s Not Mad, made during a time when Tourette’s was still widely misunderstood. His story is one of resilience, humor, and learning to live authentically even when the world struggles to understand you.

Sony Pictures Classics is preparing to bring I Swear to the U.S., with the film set to arrive in select theaters on April 24th, 2026.
