Trailer for THE DUTCHMAN Teases a Dark NYC Psychological Thriller With André Holland and Kate Mara
The debut trailer for the upcoming psychological thriller The Dutchman has arrived, and it delivers an eerie, claustrophobic tension that feels right at home in the NYC subway system where its story unfolds.
The film, directed by Andre Gaines, made its first splash at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival, earning strong reactions, and now it’s gearing up for a limited theatrical release in early January.
The Dutchman adapts Amiri Baraka’s 1964 Obie Award winning play, but this new version reshapes it into a contemporary nightmare that digs into themes of race, identity, desire, and danger.
The movie follows Clay, played by André Holland, a successful Black businessman wrestling with a failing marriage and his own unraveling sense of self. While working through therapy with his wife, Kaya, Clay crosses paths with a mysterious white woman named Lula, played by Kate Mara, and everything spirals from there.
The synopsis reads: “Clay (starring André Holland), a successful but troubled Black businessman, attends therapy sessions with his wife, Kaya, in an attempt to salvage their marriage. But their mysterious therapist is not all that he seems, and unexpectedly appears to Clay outside their sessions.
“On a New York subway, Clay encounters Lula, a seductive but sinister white stranger who slowly begins to unravel his life. Clay must discover the truth behind this encounter to get back to his wife, heal his fractured soul, and survive the night.
“In this modern adaptation of the 1964 play, The Dutchman brings a contemporary edge to the original, exploring themes of race and identity in America.”
Along with Holland and Mara, the film also features Zazie Beetz, Aldis Hodge, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. Gaines directs from a script he co wrote with Qasim Basir.
The trailer teases its dreamlike menace, jumping between therapy offices, late night subway cars, and the escalating psychological battle between Clay and Lula. It has the vibe of a volatile encounter that grows more unnerving with every passing moment, and early SXSW reactions suggested the final act hits especially hard.
The Dutchman will open in select theaters in the United States beginning January 2, 2026.
