Trailer for THE MOUNTAIN, a Heartfelt Kiwi Adventure About Friendship, Nature, and Growing Up

There’s something pretty awesome about discovering a coming-of-age story that feels personal and wildly adventurous, and that’s exactly what New Zealand’s The Mountain is bringing to the table.

With its official US trailer now out, this heartfelt comedy is finally making its way to American theaters, and it looks like an uplifting, nature-driven story that audiences will enjoy.

Directed by Rachel House, who you’ll recognize from Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Thor: Ragnarok, The Mountain marks her feature directorial debut, and it’s clear she poured a lot of heart into this one.

The film originally premiered in New Zealand back in 2024 and has since made the rounds, including a stop at the Sydney Film Festival, before gearing up for its US release this weekend.

At the center of the story are three young kids, each dealing with their own struggles, who set out on a journey beneath the watchful presence of Taranaki Maunga. Their goal isn’t just an adventure, it’s about healing, connection, and finding a sense of belonging in the natural world.

The film features Elizabeth Atkinson, Reuben Francis, and Terence Daniel as the trio, joined by Troy Kingi, Byron Coll, Fern Sutherland, and Sukena Shah.

The Mountain is described as “a heartfelt drama about three children on a mission to find healing under the watchful eye of Taranaki Maunga, and discover friendship in the spirit of adventure."

There’s a mix of humor, emotion, and a sense of wonder that makes this feel like more than just a typical coming-of-age story. It taps into something universal about growing up, dealing with pain, and learning how to lean on others along the way.

Rachel House co-wrote the screenplay with Tom Furniss, and stands out from the trailer is how much the film embraces its setting. Taranaki Maunga isn’t just a backdrop, it’s shaping the journey and reflecting the emotional landscape of the kids. There’s a strong connection to culture, identity, and the land that gives the film a unique voice.

It’s also got that fun, slightly mischievous energy you’d expect from a story about kids heading off on an adventure. There’s humor woven throughout, but it doesn’t shy away from the heavier moments either.

Hope Runs High Films is bringing The Mountain in select US theaters. Enjoy the trailer!
