GKids is bringing one of anime’s most haunting and visually stunning cult classics to the big screen for the first time in the U.S. The 1985 experimental anime Angel’s Egg from legendary director Mamoru Oshii is getting a stunning 4K restoration and a theatrical release beginning November 19, 2025. First released direct-to-video in Japan, this surreal, post-apocalyptic tale is finally being given the attention it deserves with screenings lined up at Fantastic Fest, NYFF, and Sitges Film Festival before its official debut.
Angel’s Egg drops viewers into a mysterious underwater city where a young girl clutches a fragile egg she believes holds an angel. Her quiet solitude is disrupted by a boy with a gun, and what starts as a connection between them spirals into a moment of devastation.
Featuring minimal dialogue and powerful imagery, this anime stands out for its evocative, symbolic storytelling. As the New York Japan Society describes it, "an allegorical fantasy enriched by symbolism and biblical allusion."
It’s also explained that “The film beautifully intertwines Oshii's thematic reflections on philosophy and theology, with Amano's distinctive ink painting style, culminating in an arrestingly beautiful hand-drawn allegorical fantasy.”
The film stars Mako Hyôdô and Jinpachi Nezu, and it’s a must-watch for fans of deep, philosophical sci-fi.
The film is a collaboration between Mamoru Oshii, known for Ghost in the Shell, and iconic artist Yoshitaka Amano, whose credits include Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D.
Oshii’s philosophical musings are brought to life through Amano’s ethereal ink-painted aesthetic, crafting a breathtaking hand-drawn experience.
Produced by Studio Deen and originally released by Tokuma Shoten, Angel’s Egg is Oshii’s first feature-length anime. If you’ve never seen it before, this fall is the perfect time to experience a visionary piece of anime history in its full visual glory.
