Travis Knight Says His Deep Love for MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Is What Made Him the Right Director
There are very few franchises as wonderfully strange as Masters of the Universe. It’s a fantasy world filled with muscle-bound warriors, skull-faced villains, techno-magic, and crazy-ass characters like Fisto and Mekaneck.
Fans have spent decades watching studios try to crack the code on how to bring these kinds of properties to life in a way that actually works. That’s what makes Travis Knight feel like such an exciting choice to direct the new Masters of the Universe movie.
Knight is coming at the project as someone who genuinely grew up loving He-Man and the world of Eternia. After hearing him talk about the film, it becomes pretty clear that passion for the material wasn’t just important to him, it became the foundation for the entire movie.4
“I was a fan long before I was a filmmaker,” Knight explained while speaking to the press in Las Vegas. “And so for those things I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of that I had that kind of emotional connection with when I was younger.
“It was crucial for me to try to tap into what made those things special to begin with, why I fell in love with those things in the first place, and to make sure that that stuff is honored and how we’re bringing that stuff to the screen.”
That mindset is probably why so many fans are feeling cautiously optimistic about this adaptation. Audiences have seen plenty of beloved franchises handed over to filmmakers who seemed more interested in reinventing the property than understanding why people connected with it in the first place.
Knight clearly understands that concern. He continued: “I think we’ve all seen a number of these properties that are made by people who we think maybe don’t necessarily understand them, appreciate them, love them.
“And to me, I think the most important thing for any filmmaker… is that they have to love it. They really sincerely have to believe in it and love it and put everything they have into it. And I’ve said this many, many times, but I sincerely love He-Man.
“That’s generally not something you shout from the rooftops, but I do. And so when this thing came my way, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it… this has been a dream come true for me to be able to breathe life into these characters.”
That philosophy already worked incredibly well for him once before. Knight’s live-action Bumblebee movie is still one of the best examples of how to revive a massive toy franchise without losing its heart.
While the earlier Transformers films leaned heavily into explosive spectacle, Bumblebee actually captured the personality, warmth, and spirit that longtime fans remembered from the classic animated series. It felt like a filmmaker who truly understood why people loved those characters in the first place.
That same approach appears to be guiding Masters of the Universe. The tricky part is that He-Man exists in a world that can become ridiculous very quickly if the tone misses the mark.
Knight seems fully aware of that challenge. Instead of running away from the weirdness, he embraced it while still treating the world seriously enough for audiences to emotionally invest in it.
For fans, that’s probably the most encouraging thing they could hear. Knight also seems to understand that Masters of the Universe can’t survive on nostalgia alone.
The movie has to work for longtime fans, casual audiences, and younger viewers discovering Eternia for the first time. That balance is incredibly difficult to pull off, especially with a franchise that has over 40 years of mythology attached to it.
But if there’s one thing Knight has proven throughout his career, it’s that he knows how to tell stories that connect emotionally while still delivering larger-than-life fantasy and adventure.
That’s exactly why so many people are rooting for this movie to succeed. Fans don’t just want another brand-driven blockbuster. They want a filmmaker who understands why these characters mattered to them growing up. Someone who sees the heart underneath all the oversized swords, insane costumes, and cosmic insanity.
And from the sound of it, Knight may actually be the perfect person to wield the Power Sword.
