TRICK 'R TREAT Director Michael Dougherty on the Future of the Franchise; Would Love to Do Animated Shorts

Every Halloween since Trick ‘r Treat came out, director Michael Daugherty has been asked about the sequel and when it’s finally going to happen. Well, this year he explained that it’s in “very active development,” and he made it sound like it’s actually going to finally happen.

Well, if it does happen, he also has other future plans for the franchise that he’d like to see. As you know, Trick ‘r Treat was inspired by an animated short film he created in college titled Season's Greetings, and the director is open to returning to that format. During an interview with Nerdist, he said:

'Yeah, I'd love that. I would love to do that. I'd even open up the door to bringing in other filmmakers to do shorts, whether it be animation or live-action. I just think it'd be fun. I mean, obviously, we're talking about a sequel right now, and I think animation for maybe a Halloween special. It could be just really nuts in terms of formats and styles, expand the mythology, and Sam as a character. I think it would be separate from whatever deep little path that we've done before. It's fun to sort of imagine an annual Halloween special. It might be a half-hour. It might be an hour, but something that could be more irreverent."

This franchise has always had so much awesome and creepy potential. It’s a shame that all of these years nothing has been done to expand on it. I would love to know why the studio and creative have been dragging their feet on this sequel for so long on this sequel.

If the sequel actually ever gets made and it’s a success, maybe we’ll start seeing this franchise actually flourish.
