TRON: ARES Producer Offers Update on Third Film and Says "It Feels Like the Right Time"

Disney is actually moving forward with its third Tron movie, titled Tron: Ares, with Jared Leto set to star and Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Kon Tiki) directing.

Today we’ve got an update to share from Tron: Ares producer Justin Springer, and while he can’t say too much, the creative team is working on meeting the ambitions of the films that came before, and he says that it feels like the right time for a third movie. He told CB:

"Yeah, I'm a producer on whatever the upcoming film becomes, and hopefully we'll get to make it one day soon, but we're still in development on it. And there's not much that I can say about that just because we want to get everything in order and we want to make sure we have a movie that feels like it meets the ambition of the things that have come before it. So I would love to do it. And I think now the ideas that we've explored in Tron and where you would imagine those ideas evolving to are more relevant than they've ever been. So it feels like the right time. And there's a giant ride here now, and there's one in Shanghai, but we have to get it right. We have to get the story and we have to get the team right. And so there's still stuff to do before we have much to say about the movie."

Its previously been reported that Disney is already assembling a crew for the movie, and they are looking to start production in August of this year in Vancouver. The script was written by Jesse Wigutow, and will apparently be a sequel to Tron: Legacy, which was directed by Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joe Kosinski.

It still sucks that Kosinski never got to make his sequel! It was so close to happening at one point, and right before it was supposed to go into production Disney shut it down, and the Marvel and Star Wars franchises were to blame. That’s the sequel I was excited about, though, because I loved Tron: Legacy! But, hopefully this next film in the franchise ends up being great!
