TRON: LEGACY Director Joseph Kosinski Talks About His Hope for a Future Sequel and Believes it Could Still Happen
Fans got the first taste of the world of Tron back in 1982, with the movie about a computer hacker who was abducted into the digital world, where he was forced to play gladiator-type games while trying to escape with the help of a security program. Fans waited 28 years for the sequel, Tron: Legacy, which was a good movie, but got mixed reactions.
Then there were talks of a third film for many years, and Jared Leto was even attached to Tron 3 for a while, but it died out, and nothing ended up happening. But that doesn’t me we should count it out completely. ComicBook recently sat down with Tron: Legacy director, Joseph Kosinski, who said he still believes a sequel is possible, under the right circumstances. He said:
"There's always been an interest since Legacy [for a sequel]. There's always been talk and murmuring of doing another and continuing the story. I was in China a few years ago and saw them building the TRON ride in Shanghai, which, apparently, is pretty amazing, I would love to experience that at some point. I think it's still a nice jewel in the crown of Disney IP and I think there are fans and people petitioning and pushing to continue it inside the halls of Disney. So I think it could happen. Like anything, it just needs the right confluence of ... it's all about timing and the right elements and everything's got to come together for a movie to happen. I think it's possible and I think it's worthy of it. I think there's enough ideas in the franchise, and the fact that it is so unique and nothing else looks or sounds like it, that TRON story. There is, I think, a future for the franchise and I hope they keep making them."
He emphasized in the interview that he is in no rush to make it happen, as the story, writing, special effects, actors, and all other factors have to be right. He’s not looking to make another sequel just to say he did. He wants something that does the franchise justice, and makes the fans happy, and I think that’s awesome. It’s not just a paycheck, but also a project that he feels really passionate about.
Are you hoping for a third Tron film in the future? Or are you good with the second film being the last?
