Twitter's Top Fan-Voted Film Will Be Honored at This Year's Academy Awards - This Is a Dangerous Game
The Academy of Motion Pictures is trying out something new this year. One new part of the awards ceremony is that a film from the last year will be honored based on the popular vote by Twitter users. This is a dangerous game. Don’t they remember Boaty McBoatface? When the public is consulted, they usually go for the laugh over sincerity. But it will be interesting to see what comes of it.
Another new part of the show is that three of the Twitter users who participate in the vote will be chosen to attend the 2023 show, and will be presenting an award. That definitely makes me want to participate! These winners will win an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles to present an Oscar award in 2023. You just have to vote for your favorite film released in 2021 — regardless of if the film was nominated for an Oscar — using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite between February 14 and March 3.
Meryl Johnson, VP of digital marketing at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter:
“We’re thrilled to partner with Twitter to help build an engaged and excited digital audience leading up to this year’s ceremony. Through these activations, social media users around the world now have more opportunities to engage with the show in real time, find a community and be a part of the experience in ways they’ve never been able to before.”
This sounds like a fun way to engage the audience. I know that most people don’t love the awards ceremonies as much as I do, so I will be watching regardless, but hopefully it makes for some fun viewing. Will you be casting a vote for your favorite film?
