Empire has shared a couple of new photos from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. These photos offer a new look at several characters from the film, and the director also shared a bit of new insight on the film regarding the characters and explained how each of them is from a different movie or TV show. He said:

“I liked the idea of these disparate aesthetics, as if you’re bringing in each of these characters from a different movie or TV show. So Peacemaker is from a 1970s TV show; Bloodsport is more of a modern, scary, grimdark character; Ratcatcher 2 is from some Saw horror film; Javelin looks ridiculous; Savant is kind of cool, but also kind of Def Leppard in the wrong ways; and Harley is Harley! And they’re thrown together in this sort of natural, real world that we present with Corto Maltese, which is very grounded.”

Gunn went on to talk about the creative freedom he had on this movie and how it compares to the freedom Marvel gives him:

“On The Suicide Squad I could just go anywhere I wanted to go. I mean, Marvel really lets me have a lot of freedom, but I’m still making a PG-13 movie. So I just loved the whole no-holds-barred approach of being able to make this enormous movie – with no rules!”

Working with no rules to follow certainly seems like it would be a great experience for any filmmaker because it’s super rare! Producer Peter Safran talked about Gunn’s experience making the movie saying:

“He’s said this was the most fun he’s ever had making a movie, and that joy bled into the entire production. It was a joyful experience, because it’s really an unedited version of James Gunn.”

Well, I can’t wait to see it!

The movie stars Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie and Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Steve Agee as King Shark, and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, Nathan Fillion is T.D.K., Mayling Ng as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Sylvester Stallone providing the voice of King Shark, Joaquín Cosío is Mayor General Mateo Suarez, Pete Davidson is Blackguard, Sean Gunn is Weasel, Jennifer Holland is Emilia Harcourt, and Storm Reid is Bloodsport's daughter, Tyla. Taika Waititi will also be in the film.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

Welcome to hell — a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.

Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and- destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

The Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6, 2021.
