Two Potential SHERLOCK HOLMES Spinoff Series Being Considered at HBO With Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law
HBO is in talks on the development of two different spin-off series based on the version of Sherlock Holmes that was portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in two films. Downey and his wife Susan Downey are looking to produce the two series, which would see Downey Jr. and his co-star Jude Law return to the roles of Sherlock and Dr. John Watson, respectively. The two spin-off series would each focus on the different character.
Unlike the Suicide Squad offshoot series Peacemaker and The Batman’s Penguin, which are built around existing characters, Deadline reports that the Sherlock Holmes spinoffs would revolve around characters that have not been introduced yet.
The report goes on to say that the plan has been for the characters to be part of the long-in-the-works third installment of the feature franchise. Originally slated for December 2020 release that was then pushed to December 2021, the third film has been delayed by the pandemic and currently has no new release date. The future of the potential series hinges on the fate of that potential third movie installment.
While trying to navigate Downey Jr.’s schedule, both the actor and the third movie’s director, Dexter Fletcher, who succeeded the first two film’s helmer, Guy Ritchie, have publicly expressed their commitment to making it.
If it were up to me, we would get back Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman for more seasons of their BBC series, Sherlock. This is by far the best iteration of the Sherlock Holmes stories. I also really enjoyed the CBS series Elementary that starred Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. I’m sure I would still watch the RDJ/Jude Law series if it ends up happening, I just have other preferences when it comes to these characters.
What do you think? Would you like to watch these spin-offs at HBO?
