UNCHARTED Loses Its Seventh Director as Travis Knight Drops Out of the Project
Damn! Sony Pictures just cannot seem to get this big screen adaptation of Uncharted made! They’ve been trying for years, but the directors who have been hired to develop it don’t seem to last very long.
Over the past few years Shawn Levy, Joe Carnahan, David O. Russell, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, and Dan Trachtenberg have all been attached to the project and then dropped out. The latest director to work on the film was Travis Knight (Bumblebee), and I was actually really excited to see what his take on the film would be, but it wasn’t meant to be. Knight has also dropped out! Yes, this movie has gone through seven different directors, and I’m convinced that this movie is never going to get made. It’s cursed!
According to Deadline, the reason that Knight left the project was due to scheduling. Tom Holland’s work on Spider-Man 3, which is shooting next summer, is delaying the project, and Knight isn’t going to wait around for Holland’s schedule to free up. The Uncharted release date will once again be pushed back, but Holland and Mark Wahlberg still remain attached.
While the report says that Sony still intends to move forward with the film and hire a new director, in all honesty, I’d be fine if the movie never got made because I don’t really care for the direction that the studio wants to take it anyway.
Holland is set to play a young version of Nathan Drake, and the film will tell “an origin story that evolves out of the game but is not from the game." It will follow the character as he grows into the treasure hunter that we all know from the game. I don’t think Holland is right for the role, though, and it’s clear the fans would much rather see a movie focused on the older and experienced version of Drake from the game.
The current draft of the screenplay was written by Rafe Judkins and the Iron Man team of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.
Obviously this movie just isn’t meant to get made, but if it does, Sony better hire a super talented director to make it!
