Universal and Amblin Meeting With Directors to Take on Sequel TWISTERS

Universal and Amblin are booking meetings with directors to see who should helm the movie Twisters, which they are hoping to push into production next spring. The movie will be the sequel to the beloved 1996 movie, Twister, which followed advanced storm chasers who were looking to get as close to a tornado as humanly possible to activate their invention, which would track the beast and send warnings to those in its path with much greater reaction time.

The film starred the late, great Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt in the lead roles, as well as a fantastic supporting cast. The movie is a favorite to so many, so I think it’s really exciting they’re making another one! It won’t be the same without Paxton, but I’m willing to bet it will still be a lot of fun to watch.

Deadline reports that Amblin’s Steven Spielberg himself went crazy for the script by The Revenant scribe Mark L. Smith, and his enthusiasm provided the impetus for the fast-tracked film. Top Gun: Maverick helmer Joseph Kosinski was going to direct, but he fell off the film when he committed to the Formula One racing movie vehicle for Brad Pitt that Apple acquired last June after a big auction earlier this year.

Sources say that the hope is to bring Hunt back, with a drama that focuses on the daughter she had with the character played by Paxton. She has caught the storm-chasing bug her parents had.

They haven’t locked in a new director yet, but among the helmers under consideration are the Oscar-winning Free Solo team of Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi; Dan Trachtenberg. who most recently directed the terrific Predator reinvention Prey and before that 10 Cloverfield Lane; and Travis Knight, the Laika chief whose recent animated films were Missing Link and Kubo and the Two Strings. There might be one or two others in the mix.

Who would you like to see take on the sequel?
