Universal Approached Steven Spielberg about a JAWS Reboot and They Got a "Firm No"
Steven Spielberg’s 1975 Jaws is a classic film and it should never be remade. But, of course, Universal Pictures made an attempt to make that happen. With Hollywood remaking everything else, it was only a matter of time below they went after Jaws to attempt to modernize the story for contemporary audiences.
Thankfully, when the studio approached Spielberg about the idea of rebooting the movie, he said no. Deadline reports, "One area [Spielberg] will not revisit is Jaws. Deadline heard recently that Universal broached the subject to reboot Spielberg’s breakout classic, with Spielberg producing, and the answer was a firm no. Some at Universal and Amblin said this was already known and not a recent conversation."
Spielberg has never entertained the idea of revisiting Jaws and never will. He previously stated, "I would never remake one of my own movies – starting with Jaws – but there are Amblin titles in the library that could inspire new stories that were made popular by the films. I would never remake Jaws.”
As you know, Jaws was the first blockbuster film, in fact, it defined the term. It spawned a few sequels that weren’t as good as the original, and the world will be a better place if the original movie never gets rebooted.
It’s kinda funny, though, because Spielberg has no problem with remaking other movie classics West Side Story.
