Universal Considering Smaller Budget DARK UNIVERSE Films and Dwayne Johnson is Rumored For WOLFMAN
Universal Pictures has big plans for their upcoming Dark Universe, which will focus on the rebooting of the classic monster movies that have always been a huge part of the studio's history.
This Dark Universe will kick off with Tom Cruise's The Mummy and that will be followed by The Bride of Frankenstein, which will be directed by Bill Condon (Beauty and the Beast) and maybe star Angelina Jolie. The studio is also developing The Invisible Man with Johnny Depp; Frankenstein’s Monster with Javier Bardem; and The Wolfman. According to THR, it's still rumored that Dwayne Johnson is in the running to star in the film, but there's no confirmation.
Universal and Johnson have a solid relationship that all started when he played The Scorpion King, so it's not hard to think that he could actually end up starring in The Wolfman. It'd definitely be interesting to see him take on a role like that.
The site also reports that producer Jason Blum (Split, The Belko Experiment) has expressed interest in making a low-budget monster film set in the Dark Universe franchise, and the studio is open to the idea of experimenting and trying new things within the universe.
One thing that has been confirmed is that the Prodigium group run by Russell Crowe’s Dr. Jekyll in The Mummy will be the connective tissue across this universe as they are there "to track, study and — when necessary — destroy evil embodied in the form of monsters in our world."
It sounds like Universal is going to try and have a lot of fun playing in this Dark Universe. I hope that a lot of great entertaining films come from it because I'm such a huge fan of the monsters that make up this universe.
