Universal Developing Film Focused on Dracula's Henchman R.M. Renfield and a James Wan-Produced FRANKENSTEIN Movie
Universal Pictures is developing a new monster movie, and this one will focus on Dracula’s henchman R.M. Renfield. The film will be titled Renfield, and it’s being developed and directed by Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody director Dexter Fletcher.
The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman pitched the idea to the studio, and Rick and Morty scribe Ryan Ridley wrote the script.
In the original Dracula novel, R.M. Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions, but he was actually a servant of Dracula. There are no details on what the story for the film will tell, but it’s believed to take place during the present day and is not a period piece.
Renfield is certainly an interesting character to build a movie around. It seems like a character that the creative team could really have some fun with. I’m curious to see what they end up doing with the character and the story that they’ll drop him in.
Variety also dropped in some news that James Wan is producing a new take on Frankenstein, but they offer no details. As a fan of Wan and Frankenstein, though, that’s some exciting news and a film project worth getting excited about!
This is the third monster movie to be announced since the studio changed their plans on how they would handle monster movies. The other two films include Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, which debuts in 2020, and Paul Feig’s monster movie Dark Army.
What would your pitch for a Renfield film be?
