Universal Pictures Announces Nicolas Cage's Dracula Movie RENFIELD Has Been Given an R-Rating

Universal Pictures has announced that their upcoming Dracula movie starring Nicolas Cage is getting an R-rating. Renfield has officially been given an R-rating from the MPAA for “bloody violence, some gore, language throughout and some drug use.”

The film’s producer, creator of The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman, previously said the newest Dracula adaptation will be “fun” and “extremely violent,” so this isn’t a big shocker.

The film stars stars Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, Mad Max: Fury Road), Awkwafina (The Farewell, Shang-Chi), Nicolas Cage (Raising Arizona, Mandy), Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse), Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation), Adrian Martinez (Focus), and Bess Rous (Ghostbusters).

In the movie, Hoult plays Dracula’s unhinged henchman R.M. Renfield. In the original Dracula novel, Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who is thought to be suffering from delusions but actually is a servant of Dracula. The movie is believed to take place during the present day, and in it, Renfield decides to leave that life behind after falling in love with a traffic officer.

Cage previously shared the inspiration behind his version of the character, explaining that it will be a mix of David Bowie and his late father, August Coppola. He said: "I'm trying to become the Thin White Duke for Dracula," which is referring the persona that was adopted by Bowie in the mid-'70s, which was partly inspired by the character he played in The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Renfield is set to hit theaters on April 14, 2023.
