Universal Pictures' BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN Movie Will "Almost" Continue The Story of the Original Film
Regardless of Universal Pictures' big box office disappointment of The Mummy, the studio is still moving forward with their Dark Universe monster movie franchise plans. The next film stepping up to the plate is Bride of Frankenstein with director Bill Condon (Beauty and the Beast) at the helm.
I'm such a huge fan of the original 1935 film, and I'm both very curious and nervous about seeing how they handle this new version of the film. During a recent interview with Forbes, Condon actually talked about what he is planning on doing with his version of the story and it sounds like, in a way, he wants to continue the story of the original movie. He explains:
“For me, the James Whale movie is really right there in the pantheon for me. As you know, the Bride is a character who appears in the last five minutes and then is destroyed, so it’s a way to almost continue the movie that you imagine the movie he might have made the third Frankenstein movie but in 2018.”
That's actually an interesting path to take the story and I'm a bit more open to that. I just hope to high hell that the movie has a better script and story than The Mummy! I'm still not a fan of these classic monster movies being set in modern times, but if the movies get any better, maybe it will grow on me.
Condon also went on to talk about shooting the film and says that they are looking to start production in February 2018.
“I’ve got the same team together that made Beauty and the Beast and we’re building big sets and designing big set pieces, so it’s a pretty big movie…. We start on February 1st, 2018 so it’s the early days but just to be here in London, starting to see locations and to talk about sets that we’re building, it’s very exciting.”
As far whether or not Angelina Jolie is coming on board to star in the film, he explains that no deal has been set yet, but they are trying to lock her casting down. When asked about it he said:
“Not yet, no. Nothing is set yet. I think pretty soon, but I think we’re trying to figure that out now, but obviously, pretty soon we’re going to have to start really honing in on it. I’m not trying to be coy, but I really shouldn’t say.”
The Bride of Frankenstein remake was written by David Koepp (War of the Worlds, Jurassic Park) and is set to open in theaters Thursday, February 14, 2019.
