Unnerving Trailer for Haunting Fictional Biopic SHIRLEY Starring Elisabeth Moss as Author Shirley Jackson
We’ve got a wild and unnerving trailer for the upcoming fictional biopic Shirley, based on the real-life horror and mystery author Shirley Jackson. Jackson was a mysterious and fascinating woman who wrote several novels and short stories, including The Haunting of Hill House, which has been called by many the greatest horror story of all time. Jackson was a prolific figure in the writing community, but was very secretive, and this story is a take on her strange life.
The film is based on the novel written by Susan Scarf Merrell, and was adapted by screenwriter Sarah Gubbins (I Love Dick). It is directed by Josephine Decker (Madeline’s Madeline, Room 104), and stars Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale, The Invisible Man) as Jackson. The movie also stars Logan Lerman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Hunters), Michael Stuhlbarg (Boardwalk Empire, The Shape of Water), and Odessa Young (Assassination Nation, A Million Little Pieces).
Here’s the synopsis:
No mere biopic, Shirley is a haunting portrait of author Shirley Jackson, telling a tale that didn’t actually happen. This is a fictional biography, and yet every moment rings true. Director Josephine Decker and screenwriter Sarah Gubbins have captured Jackson’s literary voice, while Elisabeth Moss has captured the late author’s very essence itself. Moss is so good here it’s scary, playing Jackson as a raging, neurotic mess prone to fits of crippling depression and bursts of brilliance. She’s a force to be reckoned with.
