Upcoming Season of KING OF THE HILL Reboot Seemingly Teases Tribute to Luanne
King of the Hill has returned to TV via a Hulu reboot, which is about to release a second season, it’s 15th officially, and fans are ready to reopen a chapter of the show that had been glaringly left unfinished.
Brittany Murphy played niece/cousin to the Hill’s, Luanne Platter, on the show throughout its run, sadly passing away just as the show was ending, but instead of recasting the role or addressing her absence, the reboot didn’t really do either. But showrunner Saladin K. Patterson has been teasing a tribute to Luanne since before the show’s return last year.
Patterson previously said, “We talked about the best way to honor [Brittany Murphy and Tom Petty], the show and the fans as well. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but we found opportunities to let them be referenced, in a very respectful way that people are going to appreciate,” and it looks like that may finally be coming to fruition.
In the new poster for the upcoming season, Big Tex, the 55-foot tall, iconic cowboy mascot of the State Fair of Texas, is seen floating amid the trees.
This is a reference to the Season 8 episode, “Girl, You’ll Be a Giant Soon,” where we see Luanne climb into the giant mascot's mouth to protest Texas State Fair’s ban on propane grills in their grilling contest.
This was a notable episode because not only did Brittany Murphy win an Annie Award for it, but it’s also one where Hank and Luanne connect in a fun way.
So while Big Tex may not be the most memorable Luanne scene, it’s a solid one, and it will hopefully usher in a sweet tribute to the character.
King of the Hill is set to return to Hulu on July 20th.
