Update on The SPIDER-MAN NOIR Series From SPIDER-VERSE Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller
A few months ago it was announced that Sony Pictures was developing a live-action Spider-Man Noir series for Amazon Studios. This is something I’ve been curiously excited about because I’m a big fan of Spider-Man Noir! Well, we’ve got an update on the project from Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and it’s still very much happening, it’s just stalled at the moment due to the writer’s strike.
During an interview with Collider, the producers were asked about the show and if it was still happening and Lord answered: “Yes! It was [in development] until the writers' strike and everything shut down. But once that gets resolved, we'll get back into it. But it's coming along nicely."
When asked if there was any chance Nicolas Cage could be playing the role in the series, Lord played coy and replied, 'There is any chance.'"
As you know, Cage voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and Cage previously talked about the character Spider-Man Noir, saying: "Well, I think it's a wonderful character. It's a character that lends itself to channeling some of my favorite noir movie stars. It doesn't matter if new generations do not know who [Humphrey] Bogart is or [James] Cagney is. The point is that those vocalizations or Edward G. Robinson, those rhythms worked. They work on camera. They work in terms of the way they sound. Spider-Man, for me, is the coolest superhero. I think to have that combined with a noir, like 1930s golden age movie star attitude, makes it one of the most exciting of all the superhero characters."
The series will be set in the 1930s as we follow the adventures of this Spider-Man variant that's ready to take on the criminal underworld in his signature noir style. We've already seen Nicolas Cage voice the shadowy hero in the critically acclaimed animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but it’s going to be interesting to see the Noir Spider-Man swing into action in live-action.
Spider-Man Noir was introduced in “a version of New York during the Great Depression. While investigating a smuggling ring, Peter Parker is bitten by what seems to be a highly-venomous spider housed inside a spider-god idol. Falling unconscious, Parker has a vision of the spider-god promising him power. He then awakes inside a cocoon and emerges from it, now possessing super-human abilities similar to a spider. As the feared vigilante "the Spider-Man," Parker wages a one-man war against the criminal underworld in New York City, partly to avenge the deaths of his uncle Ben Parker and his mentor Ben Urich at the hands of the city's major crime lord, Norman Osborn. After Osborn's defeat, Spider-Man Noir continues his vigilante life for years and opposes the forces of Nazi Germany even before the United States enters World War II. In contrast to the Peter Parker of mainstream Marvel continuity, Spider-Man Noir initially uses brutal and lethal force against his enemies and later struggles with the moral implications of this.”
I can’t wait to see this series actually start to take shape! It has potential to be great!
