Vanessa Kirby Says Robert Downey Jr. Is Doing the "Most Amazing Work" as Doctor Doom in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY
There’s been plenty of talk and skepticism surrounding Robert Downey Jr. stepping into the role of Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, Downey is synonymous with Tony Stark, so imagining him as the MCU’s next big villain has been a tough sell for some fans.
But according to Vanessa Kirby, who’s playing Sue Storm in Fantastic Four: First Steps, Downey is crushing it.
In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Kirby had nothing but praise for her co-star, calling him a powerhouse on set.
"Oh, beyond. Beyond," Kirby said when asked how she’s getting along with RDJ while filming the currently in-production Avengers: Doomsday.
"He's the most incredible human being. Soulful, deep, kind. He's been an amazing leader to us, considering we're the newbies. A lot of the others have known this world for a really long time. He's been a phenomenal leader, and he's also just doing the most amazing work."
Considering Doom’s deep ties to the Fantastic Four, it makes sense that Kirby would be working closely with him. Fans have been anxious to see what Downey brings to the character, especially since Doom is widely regarded as one of Marvel’s greatest villains.
There’s always been the fear that Marvel might inject too much Tony Stark energy into the character, but early reports and Kirby’s comments suggest otherwise.
Everything points to Doom’s look being faithful to Jack Kirby’s iconic comic book design. That’s something the previous Fantastic Four films never fully delivered on, and it’s a big deal for longtime fans.
If Marvel can nail the aesthetic and Downey brings the gravitas the character deserves, we might be looking at a legendary take on Doctor Doom, one that is sure to define the next era of the MCU through Avengers: Doomsday and the highly anticipated sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.
