Video Essay Explains How Directors Build Character Moments Through Visuals

The Cinefix team is back with a new video essay, and this time they're focusing on the ways film directors can use visuals to depict revealing character moments. Even if you never went to film school or studied anything about cinematography or camera angles, you've seen enough movies to understand a large percentage of the shorthand filmmakers use to communicate ideas to us on screen. But one of the methods that isn't discussed as much as the others is juxtaposing shots with other similarly composed shots that took place earlier in the film. It's a nice way to give us information about how a character has changed (or stayed the same) over time, and this essay nicely lays out some solid examples that make their points very clear.

How do filmmakers communicate someones inner nuance through imagery? This week on Movie Lists we look at Image Systems and how a film can use external appearances to give us clues to a characters inner world. Our Brilliant Moments come from the Duplass Brothers' Jeff Who Lives at Home, Drake Doremus' Sundance Grand Jury winning Like Crazy and Jason Reitman's Young Adult.
