Video Essay: VANCOUVER NEVER PLAYS ITSELF Gives The City The Credit It Deserves

Vancouver is the third most popular city for filming in North America, and for many reasons (tax breaks being chief among them), movies and TV shows often use the Canadian city as a stand-in for places like New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Tony Zhou of Every Frame a Painting grew up in the city and doesn't think it's gotten a fair shake on the big screen with an identity of its own since it's constantly being used to trick audiences into thinking we're somewhere else. So he created this video. I feel like people from Vancouver are especially going to love this, but even if you've never been there, it's interesting stuff for movie lovers everywhere:

Perhaps no other city has been as thoroughly hidden from modern filmmaking as Vancouver, my hometown. Today, it's the third biggest film production city in North America, behind Los Angeles and New York. And yet for all the movies and TV shows that are shot there, we hardly ever see the city itself.
