Video Explores How THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT Predicted YouTube Culture

I remember going to the little independent cinema near where I lived with my dad and brothers over 20 years ago to watch The Blair Witch Project. We got there and the line to get tickets was around the block!

The marketing campaign for this film was freakin’ brilliant. At the time it was lightning in bottle because it was the first movie to start a viral craze online. People didn’t really know the power of internet marketing before this movie came out.

The marketing team was able to build a myth and legend around this and over half the people going into see the movie thought it was real! You can’t pull that kind of marketing off these days.

Anyway, I’ve got an interesting video essay from The Take for you to watch that explores how the film became predicted YouTube culture and fame.
