Video Explores The History of Quicksand and Why People Are So Afraid of It
When I was a kid watching cartoons and movies in the 80s, there was a good amount of quicksand used in some of the stories. It instilled a fear in me as a kid that there was a chance that one day I could find myself stuck in quicksand fighting for my life.
We have a video today for you to watch from Weird History that explores quicksand and how it’s not really that dangerous. But it does include some real-life tragedies related to it.
A note that came with the video reads: “The threat of quicksand, of slowly sinking into a gritty sludge as it fills your lungs, is inextricably linked with our DNA.
“Or at least it feels that way. Quicksand has been around since at least the 1950s, when adventure stories took place in mysterious jungles and deserts.
“As those stories fell out of fashion, quicksand narratives kept chugging right along thanks to Disney.”
I actually know someone who was driving his Jeep around and he found himself in quicksand, which is pretty wild. So, it can be a real threat… rare, but real.
