Video Explores the Story of the Rarest YU-GI-OH! Card Ever
Most Yu-Gi-Oh! fans probably know the name Tyler the Great Warrior. This is the rarest card in the history of the game. Only one copy of this card exists and the story is almost a legend in the community. The story goes that back in the early days of Yu-Gi-Oh!, a boy named Tyler had a terrible cancer and the Make a Wish Foundation helped him get in touch with Konami to make his own Yu-Gi-Oh! card. The card was Tyler the Great Warrior and only one was made which the boy owned. Fast forward to today, and we have a bit more of the story and the card is being put up for auction next month!
Tyler Gressle is the full name of the young, sick boy and he’s still alive. Recently, the Yugituber Alex Cimo (Cimoooooooo) had the opportunity to talk with Gressle and learn more of the story about the card. In addition, Tyler the Great Warrior was graded (a score of Near Mint 7) and will be put up for auction on eBay on April 19. You can expect this card to fetch a pretty penny. Cimo created a fantastic documentary which I’ve included below for you to watch.
Gressle is able to tell a fair amount of his story in the video. He had been diagnosed with undifferentiated sarcoma of the liver which is extremely rare and Make a Wish wanted to do something for him. He wanted a Porsche, but he wasn’t 16 yet and couldn’t drive so they said he had to think of something else. He was a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! at the time, and decided he wanted to make a card. He got to help design it a little and Yu-Gi-Oh!’s creator Kazuki Takahashi actually did the art for the card. In fact, he did two different artworks for Gressle to choose from. If you’ve seen the artwork for Tyler the Great Warrior, you’ve probably wondered about the influences and it is confirmed that Gressle was a fan of Dragon Ball Z and so the artwork is very much inspired by that anime and characters like Trunks. Gressle got to watch the card get printed and it was immediately put in a special case to protect it. Until this video, the card had never left that case. It’s a really interesting watch in my opinion. I do wish there was a bit more about Gressle’s story, but what we do learn is great.
How much do you think Tyler the Great Warrior will go for when it’s auctioned off in April?
