Reaching out to aliens always ends one of two ways in the movies:

Heartwarming
Destruction

We never really see any other scenarios other than that. Is it possible we could be the first to make contact with another species before they can reach us? Maybe we're the invading force that destroys another civilization? Maybe it will work out exactly like it does in the films and humans will be forced to fight for survival.
