ABC is bringing back a reimagining of one of the greatest shows of all time, The Wonder Years. The original series followed Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) and his family and friends as he was coming of age in the ‘60s and ‘70s. This new series will take place in the same time period, but will follow a black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama in the turbulent late 1960s, who “made sure it was The Wonder Years for them too.”

The reimagined series was created by Saladin K. Patterson (Frasier, Psych, The Big Bang Theory), who is writing the series, with Savage directing. In a new video you can check out below, we get to see Savage call the star of the new series, Elisha “EJ” Williams, to let him know he got the job. It’s so cool to see him pass the torch, and Williams is so sweet in accepting the role.

Variety reports that “Williams will star in the role of Dean, described as an inquisitive and hopeful 12-year-old kid coming of age in a turbulent time. It’s 1968 in Montgomery, Alabama and Dean is trying to figure out his place within his Black family and the world at large. Though a little insecure, a tad awkward and a bit self-conscious, he is determined to make his mark on the world around him.”

I am so thrilled to see this new series. The original is my favorite show ever, and I can’t wait to see some more of that magic they are seeking to expand on with these new characters.
