Vince Vaughn Says "Responsible Comedy" is a "Snoozefest" and Wants Young Filmmakers Given Creative Freedom
Vince Vaughn isn’t a fan of the way big Hollywood studios are handling comedy these days. He recently went on a rant about R-rated comedies and explained why they don’t make as many of them as they used to.
Now in an interview with Variety, Vaughn is asked how easy has it been for him to find people who give him the freedom he is looking for for the project he makes.
He started off by saying: “It’s a bit like dating, isn’t it? Or making new friends. I don’t know anyone who’s like, ‘I really love someone making a character be as polite and evolved as possible.’ If anything, it’s like, ‘Can we get away with this?”
He went on to use his film Crashers as an example, saying: “I remember when we first shot Crashers, we were going super [R-rated], and we would do stuff and it was fun because we were almost making a movie for ourselves to be funny and there was no ‘parents’ around.”
He then dives into how this is an issue now and how responsible comedy is a “snoozefest.” He said: “I think that’s a big problem now — you’ve got to let young people go make a movie and leave them alone.
“They’ll figure it out in the end. And part of the fun is you meet people. Like the Zahler stuff. Look how much that has resonated, because there’s something that feels provocative, in the sense that it’s allowing itself to be what it wants to be.
“It’s not worrying about offending anyone. Like Kurt Vonnegut said, ‘If you open a window and try to please everyone, you’ll catch pneumonia.’ I think the stuff that does resonate is always things that at least feel like they’re being authentic to the piece.
“They’re not trying to code it in a way that feels responsible. That feels like a snoozefest to me; a responsible comedy feels like a time to take a nap.”
I 100% agree! If you go back and watch comedies from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s filmmakers were really pushing the boundaries and doing great things in comedy! A lot of those movies are classic and when rewatching they make people laugh their asses off!
Hollywood is not making comedy classics anymore. Most of them are pretty forgettable these days and that’s a shame.
