Vinyl Records Have Outsold CDs For the First Time Since 1987
Here’s a fascinating thing that happened that no one expected! Vinyl records are making a huge comeback and they’ve actually outsold CDs for the first time since 1987!
This information comes from The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which reports that physical music formats including vinyl, CDs, and cassette tapes have seen a 4% increase from 2021 to 2022. They also say that last year vinyl made up $1.2 billion of the $1.7 billion in physical media sales!
The report goes on to show that records outsold CDs 41.3 million to 33.4 million and that this is vinyl’s sixteenth consecutive year of growth. CD sales are falling and have dropped 18% from $585 million to $482 million in revenue between 2021 to 2022.
I never thought I’d see Vinyl make such a big comeback, but with digital and streaming music taking over the industry if people are going to start collecting physical media, vinyl is definitely the way to go! I’ve always loved listening to music on vinyl, ever since I was a kid. There’s just sound and feel to it that you can’t quite capture with anything else.
Obviously, streaming music still dominates the music industry, but it’s great to see that more and more people are jumping into the vinyl collectors market!
