VISIONQUEST Will Explore Iron Man’s Death Through the A.I. That Watched Him Die
Tony Stark’s death has been hanging over the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Avengers: Endgame, but VisionQuest is about to revisit it from someone we probably never thought to ask: the A.I. character that watched him die.
F.R.I.D.A.Y. will return in the upcoming Marvel series, and her memories of Iron Man open up a strange and surprisingly emotional question. What happens to an artificial intelligence when it fails the person it was created to protect?
VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas explained that the series brings several of Marvel’s A.I. characters together as part of the programming within Paul Bettany’s Vision, creating an opportunity to explore their experiences in ways the MCU hasn’t before.
He explained: “It brought all these really interesting questions that we get to bring to the surface here when we bring them all together.”
One of those questions goes directly back to Tony Stark. Matalas pointed out, “Like, F.R.I.D.A.Y. was there when Tony Stark died. What’s that like for an AI, to not be able to protect the one they’re programmed to protect?
“I guess the [bigger] question is, ‘are they corporeal?’ Or ‘are they digital?’ ‘Are they avatars?’ ‘Can they be corporeal?’ ‘Do some characters want to be corporeal?’ Some definitely do not. But that’s a question that the pilot will very quickly answer.”
That’s an interesting way to return to one of the MCU’s biggest moments without simply replaying Tony’s sacrifice or using it as another excuse to mourn Iron Man.
F.R.I.D.A.Y. was literally there when Tony snapped his fingers, defeated Thanos and died from the damage caused by the Infinity Stones. She witnessed the death of the man she was programmed to assist and protect, but we’ve never considered what that experience meant to her.
It also raises some fun questions about exactly how much these Marvel A.I. characters feel. If F.R.I.D.A.Y. can understand failure, loss or responsibility, where does programming end and something resembling grief begin? VisionQuest appears ready to explore that question.
Tony began using F.R.I.D.A.Y. after J.A.R.V.I.S. was seemingly destroyed during Avengers: Age of Ultron. Kerry Condon originally voiced the character and returned for Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Condon also voiced an alternate version of F.R.I.D.A.Y. in Marvel Zombies.
For VisionQuest, Orla Brady is taking over the role, giving F.R.I.D.A.Y. a new presence as the character becomes a much bigger part of the story.
The idea fits perfectly with Vision himself. He exists because of Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, J.A.R.V.I.S., Ultron and the Mind Stone, making his very existence a complicated collision between artificial intelligence and living consciousness.
Bringing Marvel’s various A.I. creations into his story allows VisionQuest to explore what these beings actually are rather than treating them as extremely sophisticated computer programs.
F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s perspective on Tony could be one of the more interesting pieces of that puzzle. Tony created her, depended on her and ultimately died while she was still trying to help him survive.
We’ve spent years looking at Iron Man’s death through the people who loved him. VisionQuest is going to ask what it meant to the machine that couldn’t save him.
