WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES is Being Pushed For a Best Picture Oscar Nomination

I don't know about you, but director Matt Reeves' War For The Planet of the Apes blew me away! That film is so damn good and easily one of the best films I've seen this year. 20th Century Fox knows that they have something special on their hands and they are planning on pushing it hard for a Best Picture Oscar nomination. After watching the movie, I don't see how it can't be nominated!

Apparently, the studio is going to be launching one of the biggest Oscar campaigns in the studio’s history with this film! Deadline reports:

"In every way Fox will be launching a campaign to 'make it about the movie,' as one person associated with the film has told me, and they have also hired a couple of top awards consultants to concentrate on efforts in just getting the film seen by members. They feel, based on response since its opening July 14, that the movie itself will take care of the rest."

In the past, the Planet of the Apes films have only been recognized for their achievements in make-up in 1968 and visual effects in the most recent films. A lot of fans think Andy Serkis should have received a Best Actor nomination in the past, but due to the motion capture technology and CGI that is done to give him the Ape overhaul, he's been overlooked. I'm sure Fox will try to push him for Best Actor this year, though. It would really be pretty cool if mo-cap actors finally ended up being recognized at the Oscars for their work in film.

Former Fox chief and a producer of War For The Planet Of The Apes Peter Chernin told the outlet that he believes the film is so good that it should be able to stand on its own:

“I’m incredibly proud of this movie, and I do believe that on almost any level of storytelling, character development, narrative thrusts, or epic-ness, this is an extraordinary movie. In the past  people probably have tended to sort of genre-ize it and sort of look at it, well, as if it is a genre movie and not take it as seriously as they should, and I think that you know our view is that this movie deserves serious consideration. Certainly it’s been made with a level of ambition, care, and attention that’s as meaningful as anything I’ve ever worked on.”

Even though it's a genre film, I don't think it should have any problems landing the nomination. In the past films like The Lord of the Rings and Mad Max: Fury Road have been nominated. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King even won. War For the Planet of the Apes is no Return of the King, but it's still a great movie that at least deserves a nomination.

This could end up being an interesting year at the Oscars with other films like Wonder Woman, Logan, and Get Out feeling the Oscar buzz. This could be a big year for genre films!
