Warner Bros. is Developing a SPACE INVADERS Movie with MORTAL KOMBAT Scribe Greg Russo

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have started developing a Space Invaders sci-fi action film project that will be based on the classic 1978 arcade game from Taito.

The studio has gone ahead and hired Greg Russo to write the script. He recently wrote James Wan’s Mortal Kombat movie, which is set up at WB as well, so the studio obviously liked what he delivered with that. Akiva Goldsman (Transformers, The Dark Tower) is also set to produce.

Deadline explains that it “will take work fleshing this into a full fledged alien invasion movie, but the title is certain a brand. In the game, a series of blocky aliens descended from the top of the screen to the bottom, and players basically blasted them until their thumbs cramped, or the invaders succeeded in overwhelming the slow-triggered defender of earth.”

I loved playing Space Invaders when I was a kid! My friend’s dad had an arcade version of it set up in his house so I have lots of fond memories spending time with my friend playing this game all day long.

It’ll be interesting to see how they end up building a story around the game, but I hope that they end up coming up with a cool and unique alien invasion concept that we haven’t seen in a film before.

What would you want to see happen in a story for a Space Invaders film?
