Warner Bros. Is Moving Forward with Its WONKA Movie and Announced a Release Date

Warner Bros. has been looking to develop a Charlie and the Chocolate Factor spinoff film for years, and they are finally moving forward with it. The movie will be titled Wonka, and the studio is looking to start shooting the film within the next four months. They’ve even set a release date for March 17th, 2023.

Harry Potter producer David Heyman is set to produce the film, and the script is coming from Simon Rich (An American Pickle). Paul King, who directed Paddington and its sequel, is still attached to helm the movie.

It’s said that the upcoming adaptation will center on “Willy Wonka’s earlier days prior to operating his elaborate house of confectionary creations.” It’s an origin story of sorts, and it was also previously reported that it will tell the story of how young Willy Wonka “met the now iconic Oompa-Loompas on one of his earlier adventures."

A few years ago is was reported that Ezra Miller (The Flash), Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049), and Donald Glover (Solo) were all up for the role of Wonka. Gosling has been wanting to play this character, and it’s a role I think he’d be great in. I also think Glover would be a great and interesting choice. But there’s no word on if any of these actors are still up for the role.

There are also two Willy Wonka animated projects that are currently in development at Netflix that Taika Waititi is writing and directing. So we’ve got a lot of Wonka greatness coming our way, and I can’t wait to see how all these projects turn out!

I’m a huge fan of Roald Dahl’s classic book and the first movie that was made. I hope that these new projects capture that same kind of magic.
