Warner Bros. is Reportedly Discussing a Live-Action SUPERMAN: RED SON Movie with Directors
An interesting report has surfaced from Den of Geek saying that a "very, very, very reliable source" says that Warner Bros. is looking into making a live-action adaptation of Mark Millar, Dave Johnson, and Kilian Punkett's incredible Superman comic series Red Son.
This whole thing got started with a Twitter exchange between Millar and Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who told Millar that he pitched a Superman: Red Son film to the studio a few months ago and that "It's the most punk rock thing the DCEU could do in my mind."
Miller then went on to tell the director that WB has since approached at least two other directors, offering them the chance to adapt the story. This is how the Twitter conversation went down:
Batmobile ☑️ Batwing ☑️ Batbeard ☑️ You just revealed my identity and have now locked yourself into an eternal tug-o-war as my supervillain. https://t.co/vuZDOifWER

This thread is giving me tangential pangs of what-could-have-been for the version of Red Son I pitched that will sadly never get made. Oy.

Did you hear WB pitching directors Red Son? Two diff pals in last 2 months. This truly is Putin's America.

Wait, really? Because I pitched it to them months ago and was told no. It's the most punk rock thing the DCEU could do in my mind.

I think it's necessary for the comic book movie as a whole to take a step beyond the shared universe by introducing one-off movies.

When I was pitching Red Son I wasn't even convinced you needed Affleck & Cavill. Public understanding of the medium has evolved...

Between the inside source and the twitter exchange, it definitely sounds like Warner Bros. is looking to eventually do something with Red Son, which is awesome! I've always felt that this story would make for an amazing film, especially if the right director was attached to it.
The site eventually got in contact with Millar and asked him for some clarification, but he backed off a bit from what he said in his tweet and told them:
"Is this something they’re genuinely planning? I have no idea. I’ve got pals at Warner Bros but never discussed it with them. I think they’re just going through their back catalogue of big books and hoping to lure in good directors as opposed to any particular interest in developing Red Son.
"There’s always 50 conversations for every comic book movie that gets made and as far as I know this is something that is very much just at conversation stage."
Well, if the studio is having conversations with directors about the possibility of developing a Superman: Red Son movie, there is interest there. Who knows if anything will ever come of it, though. If it does happen, I imagine it won't be for awhile. I hope one day a Red Son film does happen!
If you've never read the comic series, you need to check it out! The story revolves around Superman and what would have happened if he had been raised in the Soviet Union.
