Watch Audiences React to THE EXORCIST in 1973 News Footage
The classic 1970s horror movie The Exorcist is one of scariest horror films I've ever seen. I saw the film when I was kid, so it probably had a hand in messing me up. Three years ago, I wrote an article about how this was one of the horror films that changed my life, and you can read that here in case you missed it.
Over the years I've become desensitized to horror movies, and I imagine that's the same way a lot of people feel. But when The Exorcist first came out, no one had ever seen anything like it before, so it scared the shit out of anyone who watched it. The movie was so terrifying that people were passing out during screenings, leaving the theater in horror, and throwing up. Horror movies just don't have the same effect on people like this anymore.
It was a controversial horror film at the time, and a lot of religious groups were telling their congregations not to see it. Of course curiosity got the better of people, and thanks to the internet you can see what the reactions of these people were back in 1973.
