Watch New Gameplay Footage for TEARS OF THE KINGDOM
Eiji Aonuma, producer for The Legend of Zelda series, showed off some more gameplay from the upcoming game Tears of the Kingdom. This is a direct sequel (a very rare occurrence for the franchise) to the 2017 hit video game Breath of the Wild. In the video, we see Link use a new ability called Recall that lets you rewind an object which is pretty cool. We see a number of floating islands to explore. I also just noticed that Link has a different hairstyle from Breath of the Wild. In Tears of the Kingdom, he just lets his hair down.
Constructs are a new enemy that fans will encounter which seem similar to Guardians, but definitely look related to the little guys from Skyward Sword. Another new ability Link has is Fuse which can let you combine objects and I absolutely love it! We see Aonuma use it to fuse a Boulder to a tree branch which will improve the durability and power of the weapon. We also see a long stick fused with a pitchfork for a ridiculously long weapon and it’s absurdly awesome! I was already pumped for Tears of the Kingdom, but seeing the new Fuse ability has me sold 1000%! Fusing the Keese Eyeball with an arrow to make a homing arrow is game changing.
A third new ability shown is Ultrahand which will let you attach and detach items together to create new things. The example shown is combining some logs and a fan to create a raft. That’s pretty cool.
Link will also have a phasing ability called Ascend that lets you pass through ceilings. Some restrictions will apply according to Aonuma, but he does assure fans that it will work most of the time when there’s a ceiling. You can use this to make traversal easier it seems and I love it.
When we see Link descending from the floating islands back to the surface, it looks so much like Fortnite. It’s not a bad thing, just very similar and kind of funny to me. I don’t know about you, but I’m pumped for Tears of the Kingdom to release on May 12 for the Nintendo Switch. You can pre-order the game from the Nintendo eShop digitally and your favorite retailers like GameStop (affiliate link).
There was a final announcement made after the new gameplay footage. Nintendo took about a minute to show off and announce a Tears of the Kingdom edition of the Nintendo Switch OLED which will be available on April 28. It looks gorgeous! A similarly themed Pro Controller and case will also be available to purchase on May 12. You’ll be able to order the items from your favorite retailer and the My Nintendo Store eventually.
