Watch: Paramount's 50th Anniversary STAR TREK Montage Video
Last night, Paramount Pictures released a video that commemorated the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, one of the most iconic science fiction franchises of all time. You're probably sick of reading people praise Star Trek for its innovative, progressive look at society and future technology and for the way its had an immeasurable impact on the development of science in our real world, so I won't dive too far into that well-trod territory. But suffice it to say that for a franchise to stay relevant after 50 years is incredibly impressive these days, and with Star Trek Beyond (which not enough people have seen!) hitting theaters this year and Star Trek: Discovery gearing up for a release in 2017, it's showing no signs of slowing down.
With all that said, take a look at Paramount's video montage celebrating the franchise:
Is it just me, or does it seem like they sort of dropped the ball here? I've seen better tribute videos from fans, and this is the professionally made one from the studio itself! There's a ton of emphasis placed on the original series (rightly so) and the new movie trilogy (which is understandable), but there are so many characters and entire incarnations of Star Trek that get completely shafted here. I've never even seen an episode of Star Trek: Voyager, but I know Captain Janeway is a beloved character and she doesn't even make an appearance here at all! I hate being negative on an otherwise-celebratory occasion, but this seems pretty shoddy to me. They've had a long time to work on this (it's not like the 50th anniversary snuck up on them), and this was the best they could do? What do you think?
