Watch Quentin Tarantino Discuss Violence, TAXI DRIVER, ROLLING THUNDER, Brian De Palma, and More
If you’re a fan of Quentin Tarantino, I’ve got a video here for you to watch that features the filmmaker discussing several topics at the Cannes Masterclass panel. The video is 70 minutes long and in it he talks about violence in movies, the influence the film Rolling Thunder had on him, his issues withTaxi Driver, director Brian DePalma, and more.
Believe it or not, Tarantino does have a moral line that he draws for violence in his movies. He won’t kill animals. He said: “I have a big thing about killing animals in movies. That’s a bridge I can’t cross. Insects too. Unless I’m paying to see some bizzarro documentary, I’m not paying to see real death. Part of the way that this all works is that it’s all just make believe. That’s why I can stand the violent scenes, cause we’re all just fucking around.”
He added: “Some animal, some dog, some llama, some fly, some rat, doesn’t give a fuck about your movie. I’d kill a million rats, but I don’t necessarily want to kill one in a movie or see one killed in a movie, because I’m not paying to see real death. Almost always, it’s not just the violence that I have a problem with. There’s usually an incompetence factor in there.”
It’s always fun listening to Tarantino talk about movies! While he does touch on several subjects, one thing he doesn’t really touch on is the final film that he’s directing, The Movie Critic. In regards to that, all he said was: “That’s a long story, I can’t tell you guys until you see the movie. I’m tempted to do some of the character’s monologues right now, but I’m not going to. Maybe if there was less video cameras. You just have to wait and see.”
